3 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Switching Executive Careers

Executive Career Advice

January 15th 2019

Choosing to switch executive careers brings a sense of excitement at what might lie ahead. Embarking on a new adventure is always filled with anticipation and hopes of a brighter, more positive future but it can also be a little daunting. Reaching out to executive recruiters, following up on leads and tapping into your network takes time and it can be a frustrating process now and then.

However, it’s important to remember that you are not an island and this is one time in your executive career that it is wise to ask for help and use every resource at your disposal. No matter what role you are looking for, whether you or looking to move within your current industry or move into an entirely new area, there is help out there.

Executive recruitment specialists can be a great resource in helping you to overcome some of the common pitfalls that many executive candidates face when deciding to switch careers.

Whatever you do, don’t ignore your network. In the world of executive recruitment, it’s definitely about what you know but also very much about who you know.

Let’s take a closer look at how you can get started on the right foot and avoid the most common mistakes encountered when switching executive careers.

“Don’t make the mistake of going it alone, get in touch with those in the know and find the right opportunities for the next step in your executive career.”

1. Using a Standard Resume

When a job is advertised, one thing you can be sure of is that the recruitment process will be competitive. The hiring manager might spend thirty seconds reading your resume and you need to ensure that your credentials hold up to the competition. Your experience as the IT director will not help if you are applying for a position in the financial field.

That is why you need to clearly state why you want to change lanes and also, why you would be a good fit for this new position. An attention-grabbing cover letter that is specifically tailored for the executive position you are applying for will go a long way to helping you towards securing an interview.

2. Not Using Your Network

Whatever you do, don’t ignore your network. In the world of executive recruitment, it’s definitely about what you know but also very much about who you know. Over time, you will have built up a solid network of other executives, CEO’s and executive recruiters who can vouch for you, put in a good word to the right people or simply point you in the right direction of an opportunity.

Harnessing the network that you have built up over the years can open doors for you that otherwise might not appear. Don’t make the mistake of going it alone, get in touch with those in the know and find the right opportunities for the next step in your executive career.

3. Not Being Aware of the Job Market

No matter how good you are at what you do, opportunities will not always present themselves. Too many executives assume that their next position will seek them out instead of the other way around. While opportunities will present themselves from time to time, it’s important too that you keep your ear to the ground and are aware of the current job market. Keep up to date with how other executives are performing, which startups are expanding and what companies need help. All of these situations can present opportunities for you to secure a new position.

This is where the right executive recruiters are invaluable and save you a lot of time and energy. They will always have their finger on the pulse with what is going on in the world of executive recruitment and they will be able to guide you in your career switch whether you are going way beyond your comfort zone or staying in more familiar waters.

Move Your Executive Career Forward with Confidence

This is your life, your career, and your future. It’s not a dress rehearsal. You need to take the bull by the horns, follow your gut feeling and have the confidence to make a career switch when the moment is right. The thoughts of moving into a new executive position can be overwhelming at first. However, by taking the time to make a change that is right for you, you can be confident in the knowledge that you will have a brighter professional future ahead. What’s more, it will make you a happier and more content individual and these positive feelings will ultimately flow into all areas of your life.
